Churachandpur police have detained a suspect in the rape and murder of a minor girl, raising the possibility of the police nailing the culprit, three days after the girl's body was found.
Police sources said that one Lalnunnem (32) S/o Zakhuma of Ngathal was detained barely a day after the gory incident came to light.
The police delayed their disclosure about the arrest, fearing a public backlash, but the story has been leaked by some local papers forcing them to confirm the story.
The suspect who is now said to be in police custody in Imphal has undergone several medical tests at RIMS yesterday where in swab samples for forensic test were also taken.
A source speaking on condition of anonymity said, the police were more or less certain that the detained man was the culprit but were waiting the forensic or medical reports to confirm it officially.
The accused has been remanded to police custody till January 15 by the CJM.
Meanwhile, the Zomi Human Rights Foundation has joined others in condemning the ghastly crime saying and termed it as the sadistic and barbaric act perpetrated on an innocent human being.
The appalling act in which Baby Yin Yin Moo was put into and the horrifying act by which the murder was committed is incomprehensible for a civilized society, the ZHRF said while also urging all concerned individual, civil societies and the authority to rewrite the values it priorities, to seek redemption and make a soul searching within ourselves so as to avoid the happening of such incident in future.
