Use RTI to promote governance : Shyam

Right to Information Act should be used to promote good governance and strengthen democracy .
This was stated by Karam Shyam, Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and Revenue while speaking as the chief guest at the closing function of Right to Information Week Celebration-2017 at Lamyanba Shanglen, Konung Lampak, Imphal .
Appreciating the role of RTI activists for their commitment to bring transparency and accountability, the Minister said that sincere approach from the activists can transform the society.
Karam Shyam also stated that activists work under immense pressure and disturbances and all should encourage them to continue with their effort without any fear or favour.
Lack of transparency is one of the reasons for slowdown in the developmental process, he added .
Karam Shyam further said RTI is a powerful tool which can bring accountability and transparency to bring good governance in the State.
Advising the public as well as the activists to use RTI in a responsible manner, the Minister said cooperation from them will definitely transform the State.
The Act is a big step towards keeping the citizens informed about the activities of the Government, he added .
Speaking as the president of the function, Dr Radheshyam Yumnam, Chairman, Manipur Industrial Development Corporation Ltd and Manipur Electronics Development Corporation Ltd.
said that there is a need to organise RTI mass awareness programme to educate and inform every citizen of the State about the significance of RTI .
Cautioning against the misuse of RTI Dr Radheshyam Yumnam said that if RTI is used in the correct manner then the society can achieve development much faster .
The closing function of Right to Information Week Celebration was attended by RTI activists, Government officials, students and citizens from all walks of life.
As part of the function prizes were distributed to winners of the quiz competition .
Right to Information Week (Oct 5 to Oct 10, 2017) was organised by Manipur Information Commission and sponsored by Department of Personnel & Training , Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Government of India.
