Shyamkumar bats for maintaining trees

Forests and Environment Minister Thounaojam Shyamkumar today stressed on the need to maintain forest and trees in the State and urged the public to inculcate the habit of planting trees.
Th Shyamkumar was speaking as the chief guest at a one-day awareness-cum- training programme on agri and allied activities at Laikhurembi Ground, Khurai Sajor Leikai, Imphal East.
The function was organised by Bharatiya Kisan Sangh, Manipur Prant and sponsored by the Directorate of Extensive Education, Central Agricultural University, Imphal.
Stating that June and July is the right time to plant trees in Manipur, Shyamkumar said that people of different walks of life in the State plant trees but never maintain them.
'We can save the environment once we have the concept to plant trees with an aim to maintaim them as well," he said.
Dinesh Kulkarni, organising general secretary, All India Bharatiya Kisan Sangh, said, 'Consumerism has resulted in over exploitation of environment and that is why world leaders are now engaged in making policies to save the world" .
Observing that the forest cover in Manipur has diminished over the years, Dinesh Kulkarni appealed to the State Government as well as the public to plant more number of trees.
He also urged to adopt organic farming.
As part of the function, different varieties of trees were also planted.
Parliamentary Secretary (Home) L Susindro Meitei, members of Bharatiya Kisan Sangh, Manipur Prant, officials of Central Agricultural University, Imphal and locals also attended the function.
On the other hand, Th Shyamkumar also flagged off Dzuko photo expedition team from Manipur Amateur Photo Club from Maniipur Press Club, Imphal today.
The 26-member expedition team comprising 26 people will explore Dzuko Valley and capture its breathtaking scenic beauty.
Minister Shyamkumar also conveyed best wishes to the team and expressed hope they will be able to exhibit the pride of Manipur to the outside world.
