Imphal, March 09 2016:
Manipur Sociological Society (MSS) and Department of Sociology, Manipur University observed the 3rd foundation day of MSS today at the premises of Sociology Dept, Manipur University, Canchipur.
As part of the observance function, noted sociologist who is often referred to as the father of sociology in Manipur, Dr KB Singh was felicitated.
Vice Chancellor of MU Prof HNK Sarma attended the programme as the chief guest and president of MSS Prof Kshetri Rajendra Singh was the functional president.
Retd Director of Directorate of Census Operations Dr KB Singh, Consultant to Govt of Manipur Dr RK Nimai, Dean of School of Social Sciences, MU Prof N Lokendra and Director of Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policies Prof E Bijoykumar were the guests of honour.
Speaking at the occasion, Prof HNK Sarma said that there is an inherent link between science and society where sociologists play an important role.
Sociologists have a lot to contribute to the society as they play a vital role in decoding the events that have been happening in contemporary society.
"Sociologists are great scientists, and young sociologists of the department should study the intrinsic relations and social changes and its implications in the State and the North East region," added Prof HNK Sarma.
Dr RK Nimai delivered a lecture on science and society as part of the 3rd foundation day anniversary of MSS.
He stated that there is constant change in science and society.
Science has been helping mankind for a long time, he added.
Free and frank discussion is needed to develop science.
With constant interference from religious beliefs and personal beliefs, advancement in scientific knowledge is hindered, he observed.
Further he said that scientific research is costly and funding is an important issue.
Open minded discussion and discourse on scientific findings should be conducted.
Unfortunately here in Manipur there is no such advancement due to various reasons, he asserted.
Kshetri Rajendra stated that sociological perspective is the perspective on human behaviour and its connection to society as a whole.
"We tend to think of our society as just natural.
We think that it is just 'there' the way the air is.
The sociological perspective is one in which we do not do this.
The sociological perspective helps us to understand how society is important in shaping our everyday lives," he added.
This sociological perspective is the missing link between people and society, he said.
Prof N Lokendra said that the introduction of Sociology Department in the university is a breakthrough in bringing a change in the society.
The dynamics of changes can be thoroughly understood through sociological research, stated Prof E Bijoykumar.
Reviving the forum of social scientists can provide a platform for the social scientists and play their due role in changes of the society, he added.
It may be mentioned that Dr KB Singh has written a number of books and research papers and has played a key role in the development of Directorate of Census in the State.
