As in other parts of the State, the International Women's Day was observed at Ukhrul town hall yesterday under the aegis of the United NGOs Mission Manipur�Women Front and the District Women Committee.
The observance was graced by Kamjong SDO Kh Leiyaphi Rita as chief guest, president of Tangkhul Shanao Long AS Dinah as guest of honour and Dr YL Mingthing as special guest.
The International Women's Day was observed under the theme "Investing in Women and Girls" and under the theme "Women and Conflict".
Giving key note address of the observance, Rita Mangshatabam of Women Action for Development said that the existing issues of armed conflict, drug abuse and the menace of HIV/AIDS have widened gender gap in the society.
Under such circumstances, it needs concerted from grassroots level to ensure the dignity of women, she noted.
Leiyaphi Rita observed that existence of women as 'sub-human' is a result of the social system which has inculcated a mindset of inferiority or subservience among the women since generations.
To alleviate the status of women, it is paramount to root out this mindset, she asserted.
AS Dinah decried exclusion of women from all village authorities of the Tangkhuls and also from the Tangkhul Naga Long.
