Condemning the State Government's plan to establish a film industry on about 184.45 acres of agricultural land at Chingkhu Khundrakpam Loukon, a sit-in protest was staged by the villagers at Chingkhu Maning Leikai today.
Representative of Chingkhu village authority, N Iboyaima asserted, "We have been using the 181.45 acres of land for agricultural purposes since time immemorial.
Apart from that, it also serves as a playground for the children and the village's community tank, handpump, water reservoir, pond are also located in the area.
Since most of the villagers are living below the poverty line, the State Government's project to establish a film industry is like taking away our livelihood" .
He added that a team of the State Government accompanied by the SDC of Sagolmang and local MLA visited the area for soil testing on August 28.A memorandum has also been submitted to the Revenue Minister regarding the matter.
The sit-in protest which was participated by the Chingkhu village authority, Chingkhu Nupi Khunai Lamjing Meira Paibi Association, Youth Sport's Association, Chingkhurakpa Thougal Lup, Young Farming Club Chingkhu, Imphal East District was also joined by the locals of Pangei; Khundrakpam; Haraorou; Tangkham and Sambei.
The villagers also resolved to resort to vigorous democratic agitation to protest the State Government's initiative.
