The birth centenary celebration of noted writer Chingkham Pishak Singh was observed at MDU Hall here today.
The event was organised jointly by Manipuri Sahitya Parishad and the family members of the late writer.
Offering of floral tributes to the photograph of Pishak and a seminar on the life and work of the late writer were the main highlight of the observance function.
Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee Laishram Birendrakumar, Director of Arts and Culture Dr Kh Sorojini Devi and president of Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Prof N Tombi Singh were respectively chief guest, guest of honour and president of the function.
Pishak was born on October 6, 1905 at Yaiskul Chingakham Leikai, Imphal.
An educationist who was true to his calling, Pishak dedicated his life for the welfare of his students.
He was the headmaster of Churachandpur High School and the principal of Manipur College.
In 1938, he was elected as the general secretary of Nikhil Manipuri Mahasabha and went on to become the elected member against the seat reserved of educated persons in the first Manipur State Assembly in 1948 .
In 1970, he became one of the leaders of Pan Manipuri Youth League.
As a leader of the league, he was arrested under Preventive Defence Act on January 31, 1971 on alleged charge of working against the interest of the State and put behind the bar at Imphal Central Jail for six and half months.
In 1976, he became the working president of MPP.
He passed away on September 12, 1979 .
In the forenoon session of the seminar held with Rajkumar Jhalajit Singh as moderator, B Jayentakumar Sharma and Prof L Sadananda spoke as resource persons.
In the afternoon session moderated by Elangbam Sonamani Singh, Nongthombam Kunjamohan Singh and K Modhumangol Singh spoke as resource persons.
