Outreach workshop on climate change held

Institute of Cooperative Management Lamphelpat, under the sponsorship of Directorate of Environment, GoM, organised a one day outreach workshop on "Climate change-Making Phayeng a model carbon positive eco-village" at ICM, Lamphelpat today.
Womenfolk and elders in Phayeng participated in the workshop.
Speaking as chief guest of the event, Economist Prof N Mohendro maintained that nature and ecosystem which have been gifted to humans should be not be exploited.
Sudden rise in temperature and unexpected rainfall are examples of damage in the environment and the ecosystem, he added.
Maintaining that the temperature in Manipur has seen a drastic rise this year, he stated that the sudden change in the climate will first impact the fields, which are the source of the State's staple food, and eventually the production.
The high temperature will gradually affect the water bodies too including the rivers, lakes, ponds, which is another threat that we should prevent", added the Professor.
Mohendro also noted that outbreak of various diseases is another likely development following the change in temperature.
These are the climate change challenges that experts are facing at the moment, he added.
Meanwhile, Deputy Director of Environment, Dr T Brajakumar stated that numerous line departments concerned are taking up 'Model project' to tackle the problem of climate change and also to bring suitable solutions.
Brajakumar added that multi integrated initiatives under Model project will be applied to Phayeng village including forest conservation, water resource management etc.
With a view to provide an alternative livelihood for the locals of Phayeng, training programme for SHGs of the village was also launched as part of the workshop with its resource centre at the ICM.
