Imphal, February 04 2014:
Explosive devices have been recovered by the police from Sagolband Tera lukram Leirak and Majorkhul areas today with the former incident vehemently condemned by the locals who staged a sit-in protest.
The sit-in-protest was held today at Tera Lukram leirak community hall to denounce bomb threat to Superintending Engineer (SE) of Manipur Development society (MDS) Salam Roopkumar of Sagolband Tera Lukram Leirak.
Stating that a Chinese hand-grenade was found near the residential gate of Roopkumar at around 7.30 am today, some protestors told newspersons at the protest venue that Roopkumar neither personal enmity with any armed outfit nor received any monetary demand.
Roopkumar's residence was also attacked about two years back, they recounted.
Speculating that the bomb threat might be a fallout of differences between armed group(s) and MDS, Lukram Leirak Meira Paibi Lup member Margaret Keithellakpam said the incident is the second in the locality in the last few hours as unidentified persons had triggered a blast at the residence of one Soibam Ranjit.
Apart from being a residential pocket the Tera Lukram road used to be frequented by sportspersons and the general public due to location of practice grounds and FCI godowns, pointed out the member who said those involved in placing the explosive device should clarify the matter as well as refrain from such unwanted acts in the future.
Lamphel police have retrieved the explosive device.
Regarding the Majorkhul incident, a team of City police station recovered a hand-grenade at around 6.30 am from near a mobile phone retail outlet located a few metres from the southern gate of the densely populated locality.
According to a source, the grenade, suspected to have been placed on the intervention night of February 3-4 to intimidate the shop-owners, as some among the row of shops had received monetary demand from certain armed groups.
