Imphal, June 02 2013:
The Manipur University Students' Union Revival Demand Committee has decided to start all the activities generally done by Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) with effect from tomorrow pending revival of MUSU.
Speaking to media persons at MU canteen today, convenor of the committee Kangujam Karnajit pointed that MUSU has been kept defunct for the last five years.
On account of the absence of a collective students' body, Manipur University has degenerated in different areas including physical infrastructure.
In the meantime, many tea-ching staff as well as non-tea- ching staff have been found engaged in contract works.
For all these reasons, it is the collective desire of the students to establish a students' union like in other central universities, Karnajit said.
A meeting attended by around 312 students was held in Manipur University on May 17 last on the demand of reviving the disbanded MUSU.
It was after this meeting that the MUSU revival committee was set up.
Subsequently, the committee submitted a 16-point charter of demand to the MU authority on May 20.The same charter of demands was dispatched to the Union Minister of Human Resource Development Dr MM Pallam Raju on May 24 .
The principal points as highlighted in the charter of demands are revival of MUSU by May 30, opening of the university's northern, southern and western gates and clearance of all pending scholarships.
Although MU authority has started addressing most of the demands, they have not taken any decision on the foremost demand which is revival of MUSU, Karnajit decried.
On the contrary, the MUSU revival demand committee was told that the Indian Parliament should take a resolution before MUSU is revived.
Nonetheless, MUSU revival committee has decided to take up all the activities generally done by MUSU pending its revival under an understanding with MU authority with effect from tomorrow.
The committee would open its office at Students' Home earlier occupied by MUSU and it would publish Echo, research journal and organise inter-college festivals, inter-university festivals and youth festivals as done when MUSU was alive.
Saying that MUSU RDC would make a field assessment of the shortfalls and shortages together with reporters in each and every department of the university, Karnajit sought support from all concerned towards MUSU RDC rather than viewing it from a wrong perspective.
Following conversion of Manipur University into a central university, MUSU was abolished with an arrangement to replace it with students' council which would be nominated by MU authority unlike MUSU which was elected by students.
