Disabled man beaten to death, accused banished

A differently able man who was also said to be all alone died after he was physically assaulted by a man following which the assailant has been ostracised by an enraged mob upart from vanda lising his house.
The act of vandalism took place at around 3 pm yesterday at Haobam Marak Ching-tham Leikai, Imphal West district under Singjamei police station.
55 year old Chingtham Chaoba (Ranjit) s/o late Gourachand of Haobam Marak Chingtham Leikai succumbed to injuries at around 8.30 pm of December 31 .
Both his parents had expired.
Although he had two siblings, they too had expired.
One of his legs was suffering from motional difficulties.
Chaoba was allegedly assaulted by his neighbour Thongam Sarat and his family on December 25.He was taken to JINMS and Raj Medicity one after another before he succumbed to the injuries on December 31 at his home, informed a source.
Thongam family was staying at the home of Chaoba by paying monthly rent.
After sometime, the family bought a piece of plot and built their own house.
They shifted there from Kwakeithel Thounaojam Leikai.
Chaoba was physically assaulted after he accidentally scattered some eatables/ dishes which were prepared for masons engaged in the construction of Sarat's house.
On learning about the death of Chaoba, a large group of people belonging to the locality set ablaze two cars and a generator set kept at the house of Sarat.
Some parts of his house were also vandalised.
Later, the local club (20th Century Club) and Meira Paibis held a joint meeting and constituted a joint action committee.
Subsequently the JAC resolved to banish Sarat and his family from the locality.
Last rites of Chaoba were performed yesterday by people of the locality after post mortem at RIMS while a case has been registered at Singjamei police station in connection with the assault and subsequent acts of vandalism and arson.
