Imphal, July 01 2013:
Many farmers in Thoubal district are in deep trouble as a sizeable area of farmland of Sellou Lamyai Loukol, located between DC office complex and Thoubal Police Station, has been inundated with flood water.
Although, the farmers have already completed the first cropping season with irrigated water from Thoubal Canal, the paddy field is now inundated with large volume of water overflowing from the canal.
The culvert which is at Sorok Pakchao point is not able to drain away the overflow of water from the canal, which has ultimately led to the inundation of large quantity of water in the paddy field.
Since past many years, the paddy field has been facing the woes of flood as National Highway-2 passes through it.
Although, farmers intend to complain the matter to the Government, they are helpless as the high ranking officials of PWD who handle construction of culverts and small bridges are not posted in the district.
Another pair of culverts located at Sorok Pakchao is totally clogged with mud deposited from highway expansion works.
As such farmers of the district want the officials of PWD to pay a spot visit at the area and solve the problem at the earliest.
