Prisoner found hung to death

A 25-year-old prisoner has been found hung to death at Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa today morning.
The man identified as Arambam Naobi (25) s/o (L) Ibomcha of Takhel Makha Leikai had been lodging in the jail in connection with the murder case of one Khundrakpam Sanathoi of his locality and assault of two other since last year.
He was found hung to death inside a cell at Sector 5 of the jail.
A source said that the deceased had a mental illness since the past 10 years and he had been given treatment by different psychiatrists before he committed the crime last year.
Family members said that they went to the jail after they got information about the incident.
However, the jail authority did not allow them to enter the jail, they added.
Meanwhile, a jail source said that Naobi had been staying at Sector 5 where mentally unsound prisoners are isolated from other prisoners.
When the jail staff made a routine check this morning, they found Naobi hung to death using a towel.
The body was brought down after forensic experts conducted inquest of the cell, the source added.
Heingang police brought the body to JNIMS morgue for post mortem examination.
Later, post mortem examination was conducted in the presence of a Duty Magistrate with full video coverage.
Naobi's body has been handed over to his family later in the afternoon.
