Imphal, August 24 2015:
For the first time, doctors of SKY Hospital and Research Centre successfully performed non-operative opening of an occluded/narrowed heart valve of an 18-year-old girl of Kairang on August 22 .
The valve was expanded to normal using balloon dilatation method.
The girl used to experience extreme breathlessness while walking and going upstairs before the treatment.
However, she does not have this complaint now, said chairman and chief cardiologist of the hospital Dr Shyamkishore.
|
He said that this complicacy known as Rheumatic Mitral Stenosis normally develops among women due to infection in heart valves during childhood.
This complicacy can be cured if given treatment in time, he said and added that the patient may die during child delivery if it is not treated before she conceives a baby.
Symptoms of Mitral Stenosis is breathlessness even at the time of sleeping and collapse while walking fast, he said.
If anybody experiences this symptom, her/his heart must be checked using eco-cardiography.
