Imphal, November 23 2016:
Stock of essential drugs at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) will last for another two months, JNIMS Director told the Sangai Express today.
The UNC's economic blockade entered 23rd day today.
Availability of essential commodities like fuel, food grains and medicines are getting dearer with the passing day.
The frequency of bandh and blockades in the State has necessitated Government and other hospitals to stock pile medicines for urgent use.
JNIMS Director Professor Deben Laishram said JNIMS started stock piling essential drugs since 2015.The hospital procures three months average requirements of life saving drugs in advance to avoid shortage during blockades or bandhs.
"If the UNC's economic blockade continues for long, we are in trouble.
The present stocks will get exhausted within two months", Prof Deben stated.
"With high security many goods laden trucks reached Imphal recently.
It would be great if the State Government can manage to transport medical items in such way," he said.
The Director further stressed on the difficulties faced by the hospital staff due to dearth of fuel in the State.
A memorandum has been submitted to the State Government requesting them to arrange fuel for the hospital staff.
The Government is yet to respond to the request, he said.
"If the blockade continues, we will have no other option but to walk to the hospital or ride a bi-cycle to work to attend to the patients," Deben stated.
