Imphal, June 13 2016:
Elected Ward Members of Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) have decried the alleged negligence by the Govt and demanded that they should be sworn in properly like other elected Councillors/Corpor-ators.
Elected Ward Members from the 27 Wards of IMC today formed a body known as Imphal Municipal Corporation Ward Development Committee Members Forum at Brahmapur Nahabam Community Hall to press the State Govt to give them due recognition.
Addressing media persons at Uripok after the forum was formed, general secretary of the forum, Haorungbam Santosh, Member of Ward No 4 under Uripok AC said that in the previous terms, elected Councillors were given due acknowledgment by the Govt by administering them oath.
Elected Ward Members were left neglected and such differential treatment is not acceptable, he said.
Steps taken up by the State Govt to conduct oath taking ceremony for elected Councillors/Corporators of the Imphal Municipal Corporation will be boycotted if the same treatment is not accorded to the elected Ward Members too, he added.
The Imphal Municipal Corporation Ward Development Committee Members Forum will launch agitation and would surrender the election certificates to the Return- ing Officer if oath taking ceremony for them is not conducted, he warned.
Such 'unfair' conducts were highlighted to the authorities concerned including the Chief Minister but no step to give recognition to elected Ward Members has been taken up, he alleged.
Further he stated that such biased attitude towards the Ward Members would lead to harmful consequences in the functioning of IMC.
Thongam Govind, Member of Ward No 19 under Yaiskul AC is the president of the forum while Huirem Deepak, Member of Ward No 6 of Uripok AC and Yendrembam Premila, Member of Ward No 1 of Thangmeiband AC have been the publicity secretary and treasurer respectively, said Santosh.
