Imphal, July 08 2011:
The 18-hour State wide general strike called by proscribed KCP (Maoist) in protest against hike in the price of fertiliser ended peacefully.
The general strike which came into effect from last midnight, however, affected normal life in the State.
The impact of the general strike was more palpable in the four valley districts where all the markets and other business establishments remained shut down and educational institutions closed.
The attendance in most Government offices was also reported to be thin.
During the general strike no passenger services plied on the road.
Although some private vehicles could be seen on the road.
Even though the general strike reportedly did not have much impact in the hill districts, suspension of the inter-district transport did affect normal day to day activities of the people there as well.
However, markets places, shops, educational institutions and Government offices function normally.
On account of the general strike, many Imphalbound goods laden trucks reportedly remained stranded at Mao Gate and managed to arrive here late evening.
But no Inter-State buses left from here for today.
Flight service, however, was normal.
Security forces were deployed to prevent any untoward incident during the general strike.
