Mysterious death of Babysana : 7 protesters hurt in police action

Imphal, August 04 2019:
At least seven volunteers of AMSU suffered minor injuries and were admitted for treatment in Raj Medicity after a major scuffle broke out between locals of Thangmeiband, AMSU volunteers and Imphal West district police personnel today evening.
The incident occurred after a large number of AMSU volunteers took out a protest demonstration from AMSU headquarters and marched towards Khoyathong demanding justice for Ningthoujam Babysana.
Locals and womenfolk of Thangmeiband who were staging sit-in-protest by blocking the road, also joined the protest rally of the AMSU volunteers.

Upon reaching Khoyathong crossing, the protesters were stopped by a large number of Imphal West district police personnel and a heated argument broke out between the two sides Finally, police resorted to firing several rounds of tear gas shells and mock bombs to disperse the protesters from the middle of the road.
On the other hand, AMSU volunteers and locals also retaliated by pelting stones and rocks at the police personnel.
However, police were able to push back the mob till AMSU headquarters by firing a large number of tear gas shells and mock bombs.
During the scuffle, at least seven AMSU volunteers sustained minor injuries (some fainted) and as such they were rushed to Raj Medicity for treatment.
Three executive members of the students union were also picked up and detained by police from AMSU headquarters for some hours.
They were however set free at around 7.10 pm.
In the end, the situation was brought under control by the police team.
Meanwhile, a large number of police personnel have been deployed at Khoyathong-Thangmeiband road stretch to prevent any kind of further unwanted incidents.
On the other hand, the JAC formed in connection with the death of Babysana, has called for an emergency meeting of all CSOs, student unions, women organisations etc at THAU tomorrow in connection with the present condition of the case.
