Imphal, August 29:
In connection with the upcoming visit of Union Home Minister Shivraj Patel, Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) has today appealed to the State Govt to take the initiative and pressurize the Union Home Minister so that the dreaded AFSPA may be lifted from the State within a short period.
In a statement, MUSU said that the Govt will be making a grave mistake if it tries to sideline the demand of the people and tries only to get some "financial package" from the Minister for paying the "disturb area allowence" to some of its employees.
It also stated that the Govt should not compromise with the wishes of the people with anything other than complete removal of AFSPA from the State.Stating that the Govt should highlight the negative aspects about the prolonged imposition of AFSPA in the State, MUSU said that Govt should asked the Home Minister to lift the AFSPA from the State as soon as possible as it has not only failed to served its purpose but has considerably increased custodial deaths and army tortures in the State.
