Imphal, December 28 2020:
The BJP Government has retrograded the country to the pre-Independence era when British rulers subjected Indian people to all kinds of repressive and exploitative measures, asserted Congress Working Committee (CWC) Member Gaikhangam.
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) celebrated the 136th foundation day of Indian National Congress (INC) at Congress Bhavan here today where MPCC president Govindas Konthoujam unfurled the party flag.
Senior Congress leaders were also felicitated on the occasion.
Speaking at the function, Gaikhangam ridiculed the incumbent BJP-led State Government as a farcical Government.
He said that several projects which were inaugurated during the time of Congress Government are being inaugurated afresh.
Pointing out that State Government got the 'incomplete' Thoubal Multipurpose Project inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah yesterday, Gaikhangam said that it would be a big loss for the people of Manipur if the Central Government refuses to sanction any more fund for the project on the ground that it has been already inaugurated which implies the project has been completed.
It was rather surprising that the Union Home Minister laid the foundation stone for HIT Mantripukhri which was inaugurated four/five years back and academic sessions had already commenced, Gaikhangam remarked.
All other political parties were formed by men who were earlier members of Congress as they were hungry for power and personal benefits, he said.
It was the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru who developed several infrastructure and led India on the path of becoming a superpower, he asserted.
Under the BJP Government, there is neither freedom of press nor freedom of speech.
At the same time, the Constitution and Parliamentary democracy have been rendered meaningless, asserted the CWC Member.
Instead of upholding the Constitution, the BJP Government has been muffling the masses in order to carry on their nefarious agenda, he said.
He said that it is time to launch a massive civil movement against the Government which has been denying the masses right to freedom of speech and expression.
The BJP Government has been forfeiting all the rights of farmers.
The Government is anti-people and anti-farmers, he continued.
Veteran politician Okram Joy remarked that the observation of the 136th foundation day of INC assumed greater significance in the backdrop of the political changes seen across the world.
It was the non-violence movement led by Mahatma Gandhi which liberated India from the yoke of British colonial rule, he said and added that during the contemporary period where there is so much tension, conflict and violence in different parts of the world, Mahatma Gandhi's and Congress party's non-violence movement can be studied as an effective way of resolving all kinds of issues.
The man who mercilessly assassinated Mahatma Gandhi belonged to the saffron party.
They killed Mahatma Gandhi and they also idolise the same leader.
It is nothing but double-standard, Joy remarked.
The Government's days are numbered and it would not be long they collapse, he asserted.
Both Parliamentary democracy and the judiciary have failed under the BJP Government, Joy said.
Asking how many roads have been expanded and how many hospitals built by the BJP-led State Government which is now almost four years old, MPCC president Govindas Konthoujam asserted that the incumbent Government is direction-less.
The Government is still unable to complete and inaugurate many projects which were initiated and half-completed by the Congress Government.
Questioning if the Government has done anything worthwhile, Govindas asked all the people to stay away from the Government which has been denying all the citizens the right to freedom of speech and expression.
Former MPCC presidents TN Haokip and M Okendro too spoke at the function.
