Imphal, June 27 2012:
The Mate Tribe Union (MTU) has strongly opposed the machination of the Mate Tribe Council (MTC) in getting the activities of MTU curtailed by filing a case.
Addressing a press meet at Manipur Press Club yesterday, Vice-president of MTU, KS Mate said Mate Tribe Union is a legitimate apex body of the Mate tribe and constituted by Mate chiefs and social leaders.
Elated with the recognition granted to the tribe by the Government of India in its Constitution's Scheduled Tribe lists, the MTU was also set for a grand celebration at Tengnoupal on June 15 last.
However, due to the instigation of MTC, the celebration programme was banned, KS Mate said.
Stating that Mate is a one of the tribes of Manipur which has a population of over 10,000 spread across in around 100 villages, the MTU vice-president said the ban has bellitled the MTU and created confusion among the Mate people.
As such, the MTU demanded that the Government to immediately revoke the ban and blacklist the little-known Mate Tribe Council.
The MTU further threatened to launch stir if the demands are not considered by the Government at the earliest.
