A bailey bridge situated at Koide Biisho under Senapati collapsed this morning at around 8 after a cement laden truck crossed the bridge, creating serious transportation issues thereafter.
None were killed or injured in the mishap.
In this regard, Senapati DC Mahesh Chaudhari has issued an order for complete closure of the bailey bridge with immediate effect to avoid untoward incident and ensure public safety.
The bridge was reportedly inaugurated by K Ranjit Singh, the then Works Minister on May 13, 2008.On spot enquiry, nut bolts and screws were found missing while the steel deck made loud noises possibly due to loose bolts.
Maram-Phaibung Road Development Committee had earlier submitted a memorandum to the Chief Engineer of PWD and highlighted the deteriorating conditions of the bridge.
However, no actions were taken up according to the committee.
Speaking to this correspondent, KS Solomon, convenor of Maram-Phaibung Road Development Committee said that the bridge was on the verge of collapsing since the past as no maintenance works were done.
The committee convenor said that the collapse of the bailey bridge ha^put the people of the areas and travellers in difficult positions and urged the authorities concerned to do the needful at the earliest.
Karong AC MLA J Kumo Sha has also inspected the conditions of the bridge.
Speaking to media persons, the MLA said that he had already informed Chief Minister N Biren Singh and Works Minister Govindas Konthoujam of the bridge collapse.
The MLA conveyed hope that the Government will respond positively.
The inspection was carried out in the presence of members of Maram-Phai-bung Road Development Committee, Koide Union, Poumai Naga Students Union (PNTM) and locals of Koide Biisho.
