Imphal, July 22 2018:
Thangmeiband Apunba Nupi Lup (THANIL) has strongly opposed the Manipur Liquor Prohibition (Second Amendment) Bill 2018 which was tabled on July 20, during the ongoing Monsoon Assembly session.
A press release issued by the president of THANIL demanded the Bill to be withdrawn immediately and explained that for the past many years womenfolk, CSOs and Meira Paibis have been working tirelessly to protect the society from the evils of alcohol abuse.
It claimed that it is wrong for the State Government to try and legalise alcohol brewing in the State despite the presence of a Prohibition Act and alleged that the statement of the Finance Minister during the Assembly session that ban on alcohol leads to loss of around Rs 350-400 crore for the State, is a statement which is based only on economy of the State but without any thoughts for the welfare and future of the society.
It further claimed that the State is importing rice from outside as the locally produced rice is not enough to feed its people and explained that is the Bill is passed, the people will starve as the Government will take away the rice for brewing alcohol.
Demanding the Bill to be withdrawn at the Assembly session tomorrow, THANIL further informed that a memorandum has also been submitted to Thangmeiband A/C MLA Kh Joykisan to intervene into the matter during the Assembly session tomorrow.
