Imphal, August 21:
A 'Peace Rally' sponsored by the 14 Assam Rifles was stopped today by the Naga People's Organization (NPO), Senapati terming it as against the wish of the people.
The rally which was to be held at different places along NH 39 under the jurisdiction of the 14 AR stretching from Lairowching to Motbung was about to take place as most villagers were compelled to do so under threat.
Several placards prepared by the Assam Rifles read as; 'Save our Souls, Assam Rifles protect our lives', 'Assam Rifles, Friends of the Hill people', 'We love peace, we love God, we love the security forces'.
When NPO president accompanied by his colleagues asked the people who were about to take out the rally whether they are doing so on their own will or under pressure, the people replied that they were taking out the rally because they have been forced by the AR personnel and also said that they have been warned with serious repercussion in case they fail to comply.
After hearing their stories NPO president M Dili asked them not to take out the rally as it was against their wishes and assured them that NPO will be responsible of any consequences.
The villagers who were doing so under duress thereafter submitted all the placards prepared by the AR to the NPO.
Some villagers are reported to have been made to sign on blank letter heads of their own.
Meanwhile, the NPO president has expressed unhappiness over today's conduct of the 14 AR trying to forcibly use the people for some purpose as well as over the detention and humiliation caused to him by one Major of the 14 AR at Kangpokpi bazaar while he was returning after meeting Kuki people.
The president said that his vehicle was frisked and detained for about half an hour, even threatening to arrest him.
