Imphal, December 17 2014:
The Keirao Kendra Minority Muslim Development Organisation (KKMMDO) has warned the Government that all the six suspension bridges built across Iril river within Keirao Assembly segment would be closed if these bridges are not repaired within a week.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here this afternoon, KKMMDO president MI Khan said that the eastern part and the western part of Keirao A/C which has around 25,000 voters are connected by the six bridges.
These bridges were constructed between 1970 and 1995.Now pavements of these bridges are adorned by holes as long as five to twenty feet as many wooden planks have worn out over the years and vanished.
Out of the six bridges, three have inclined either left or right due to snapped steel frames or cables.
On account of the risky conditions of these bridges, people have to travel additional 7/8 Kms to cross Iril river from either side through Irilbung bridge, MI Khan said.
Moreover, three persons have been crippled by the hollow sections of the bridge pavements.
Even as youth clubs and other organisations of Keirao A/C have appealed repeatedly to repair the worn out bridges, the Government has been paying no heed.
In case the Government fails to repair these bridges within a week, KKMMDO would repair the bridges together with people of the Assembly segment.
If the Government still refuses to act, people may be compelled to close the State highways passing through the Assembly segment, he hinted.
He went on to ask if no fund was incorporated in the State budget for repairing the particular suspension bridges.
