Modern and scientific techniques of pumping up groundwater to help solve the problem of water scarcity was deliberated at length at a two-day regional workshop that kick started at Classic Hotel from today.
Manipur Remote Sensing Applications Centre, North-Eastern Space Applications Centre, Government of India, Public Health Engineering Department, Government of Manipur and National Remote Sensing Centre, Government of India jointly organised the workshop held on the topic 'Usage on Groundwater Prospects (HGM) Maps of RGNDWM Project for North Eastern States' .
Speaking at the opening session of the workshop as chief guest, PHED Principal Secretary WL Hangshing said, his Department would try to implement the techniques of pumping up groundwater suggested by different experts at the workshop.
Hydrological Group Scientist-SF Dr K Seshadri said that the country is planning for systematic usage of groundwater through the Hydrological map developed under Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water Management.
Remote sensing organisations would locate the sites for construction of handpumps at different villages, Seshadri added.
After having a thorough discussion on the techniques of pumping up groundwater, the experts would start conducting field visits at different localities from tomorrow.
PHED Planning Monitoring Circle Ph Yaima said that the techniques suggested by the experts would be adopted if it would not give loss to the Department.
Saying that the Department has been installing handpumps at different localities from time to time, Yaima said that around Rs 3.5 lakh is spent per handpump in the State.
The current project is planning to install 2870 handpumps, he added.
PHED Chief Engineer M Imomacha, NESAC Director Dr S Sudhakar and Drinking Water and Sanitation Consultant AG Samunga Sundaram also spoke at the the workshop.
A CD on the map of groundwater prospects of Manipur was also released at the workshop.
