Imphal, September 15 2020:
Education Minister Dr Thokchom Radheshyam has called for public legal education (legal awareness) to empower people, especially women on the occasion of 14th foundation day of the Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) observed at Kombirei Conference Hall, DC Office Complex, Imphal West today.
He stated that a person, in any case related to crime, first approaches the police station and then the Court.
Unfortunately, not many people are aware of the legal system.
It is imperative to create awareness of the legal system comprising activities intended to build public awareness and skills related to law and the justice system, he said.
Radheshyam lauded the MSCW for counselling the Police Department on handling cases of crime against women.
He added that the judiciary, commission and other related forums have been addressing the concerns of the people in an exemplary manner.
There is relatively "low" rate of discrimination in the State on gender, caste, creed or religion.
However in recent times, cases related to crime against women are increasing in the State.
It is therefore important to find out the causes of the crime against women including domestic violence, he added.
He also stated that women are the majority work force in many service sectors and in the Education Department in the State, around 70% of the employees are women.
He emphasized the need to empower women in all spheres so that they continue to play important roles in making the society better for the future generations.
Chairperson of MSCW, Dr Binota Meinam in her speech highlighted the indicators for gender equality - health, education etc and stated that in every society women have been working and contributing for the growth of the economy.
Their contributions need to be recognised and accounted for by the society, she said.
A newsletter, 'Women News Horizon' (Vol-IV) was also released during the function and a draft copy of 'Gender Policy & Budgeting' was also handed over to the Minister.
Judges, SPs of districts, legal experts and top civil officials attended the event.
Many personalities were also feted and awarded for their contributions towards 'gender justice' .
