Imphal, January 14 2016:
As done in the previous years, the 27th Drivers' Day was observed across the State by different organisations.
All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers' Union organised the Drivers' Day observance programme at Langjing Achouba Truck parking.
Floral tribute was offered to 211 drivers of the State who lost their lives while on duty.
Speaking as the chief guest at Langjing Achouba, Social Welfare Minister AK Mirabai exuded confidence that the observance of Drivers' Day would go a long way in boosting the collective strength of the drivers.
No society could achieve development or tread the path of progress without drivers.
As such, the drivers who dedicate to serve the people, deserve respect and honour from the society, Mirabai said.
President of AITUC, Manipur and ex-Minister Dr M Nara said all sections of the society should lend support to the activities and movement of the drivers.
Drivers would not be able to render full service without support of the public.
He categorically asked why the Central as well as the State Govt are reluctant to set up highway protection forces.
Dr Nara further said that full cooperation would be extended from his end as and when any measure for setting up of highway protection force is initiated.
Transport Director, Haobam Rosita said that the prevalence rate of road accident is high in Manipur.
She urged the drivers to follow and adhere to road safety guidelines so as to reduce accident rate in the State.
The Manipur Drivers' Welfare Association organised the Drivers' Day observance programme at Meino Leirak community hall.
A two-minute silence was observed as a mark of respect to the departed drivers.
MLA L Ibomcha attended the programme as the chief guest.
Speakers of the function stressed the need of unity and solidarity among the driver community in order to realise their welfare.
The All Manipur Petroleum Tanker Drivers' Union observed the day at Mantripukhri community hall with PDA Chairman and MLA T Mangibabu as the chief guest.
Tiddim Road Drivers' Union, Unemployed Khongjom Tata Magic Owners' Welfare Association and Inphal-Ukhrul Road Drivers' Union also observed the day at their respective offices.
The Drivers' Day observance has been held every year to commemorate the drivers' agitation on January 14, 1990 against the various atrocities on drivers along the National Highways.
