Ukhrul, September 12 2015 :
In the backdrop of unscrupulous traders hiking the prices of essential commodities in Ukhrul town, Tangkhul Leihsak Long (TLL-Tangkhul Trade & Commerce Council) began a sustained drive against such hikes and illegal trading of essential commodities in the town market since Friday.
A team of TLL led by Convenor, Action Committee Ngakuimi Awungshi conducted random checking at shops around the town on Friday and seized some good commodities including rice.
Talking to media persons at TLL Office at Phungreitang on Saturday, Awungshi said that so far 11 bags of superfine rice which were found short of measure by 5 to 9 kgs per 50 kg bag had been seized from 5 shops in Wino and Phungreitang bazaar in the first round.
Superfine rice is normally sold at Rs.22 per kg and Rs.850 to Rs.950 per bag of 50 kgs depending upon the measure.
"We are carrying out this drive in the face of many unscrupulous traders taking advantage of the recent snapping of the two highways and hiked prices of various essential commodities in the town," he informed.
Awungshi also warned those traders not to repeat such illegal acts in future while appealing to all traders and shops not to hike prices of essential commodities by creating an artificial scarcity.
There have been complaints from consumers that prices of petrol and cement have been hiked from Rs.80 to Rs 90/100 and from Rs.450/460 to Rs.900/1000 respectively, he said adding that if they continue to sell the goods at hiked prices in the next inspection, stringent actions would be initiated against them straightaway.
He then said that the team would also check adulterated local rice which is found freely sold in the market.
