The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA) met here tonight to discuss the situation in Manipur in the context of month-long agitation against Armed Forces Special Powers Act which was withdrawn by the State Government.
The meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was attended by among others Home Minister Shivraj Patil, Finance Minister P Chidambaram, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Communication Minister Dayanidhi Maran and National Security Advisor J N Dixit.
The Army chief Gen N C Vij and the DGMO briefed the meeting on the situation in the state in the context of demand for withdrawal of Assam Rifles and the controversial law.
After the meeting, Mukherjee told reporters that the meeting discussed the situation in Manipur.
"We have decided to watch the developments there," he said at the end of a nearly two-hour meeting.
Mukherjee said Manipur Government has modified the notification of the Special Armed Forces Act to the State partially today.
On May 30 this year, Manipur Government had issued a notification extending the Act to the whole of the State and today they modified the law, he said.
"Now the notification reads �the whole state excluding Imphal municipal area," Mukherjee said.
Asked whether the Centre was not in agreement with the State Government�s decision, Mukherjee said it was not a question of agreement or disagreement.
