Awareness on PC and PNDT Act held

To curb the menace of female foeticide and bring gender balance, a one day awareness programme on Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC and PNDT) Act for frontline workers and pregnant women was held today at the conference hall of Family Welfare, Imphal organized by Institute of Peace and Progress (IPP) under the sponsorship of District Health Society, Imphal West district, Govt of Manipur.
PC and PNDT Act, 1994 is an Act of the Parliament of India enacted to stop female foeticide and address the declining sex ratio in India.
The Act banned prenatal sex determination.

Director of Family Welfare K Rajo, State Nodal Officer PNDT Dr Th Arunkumar, Advocate Member State Appropriate Authority, PNDT N Bino and member of State Appropriate Authority PNDT O Sumatibala were among the resource persons of the awareness programme who spoke on PC and PNDT Act and its salient features.
Under the PC and PNDT Act there should be compulsory registration of all diagnostic laboratories, all genetic counselling centres, genetic laboratories, genetic clinics and ultrasound clinics, but unfortunately there are only 107 registered ultrasound machines in the State, stated Sunitibala.
It is high time for the authorities concerned to keep a tab of unregistered ultrasound clinics and ban them.
In detecting unregistered ultrasound clinics Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) can play an important role, she added.
She stressed on the roles of the public in bringing a balance between male and female in the society and added that without women, there cannot be a developed society.
Rajo said, "To change the mindset of the society and traditional beliefs of gender preferences, such awareness programme in grass-root level should be encourage" .
Citing examples of women who have excelled in various fields, he added that the society should never neglect the role played by women in bringing a change and development.
He further urged the people to extend their help in bringing the society where there is gender equality.
As part of the programme an interaction session was conducted for the frontline workers and pregnant women with the resource persons.
