Imphal, January 12 2013 :
Ukhrul Police Department is rendering a yeoman service in making available essential goods at discount rates/prices to the denizens of the district through the service of its Unit Canteen opened at MG Avenue in the heart of the district headquarters.
Talking to this reporter, Sub Inspector H David, who is currently in charge of day-to-day running of the canteen said that the aim of opening the canteen and making it easily accessible to civilians is to promote better relationship between police and the public in the district.
Elaborating on the soured police-public relationship, David said, "There has been some instances where there are discontentment among the public over some police personnel who behave under the influence of intoxicants in the execution of their duty.
So to erase this bad image of the police we are providing this service in the interest of the public and we are now keeping a check on the use of alcohol or drugs in the service of this canteen" .

Refering to the benefits of the service, he said it is different from those canteens run by the Assam Riffles which ask for smart cards so anyone can come and buy whatever they want without any cards here, adding that it is offering equal discounts for both police personnels and civilians alike.
"We are selling every goods at a discount and this provides better profit margin than market wholesellers for small shops in different localities" .
Established on November 30 last year, the canteen has achieved a daily turnover of Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000 on average depending on stock availability.
"Our goods categories range from police uniforms to food stuffs and household goods and we procure our stock from the BSF godown at Koirengei" he added.
