Imphal, November 11 2009:
In pursuance of the public demand for justice in the 7/23 Khwairamband Bazar firing incident that left two persons killed and five others injured, a mass signature campaign has been launched under the main initiative of the youth front of Manipur People's Party (MPP).
The campaign was formally launched with MPP president Dr Nimaichand Luwang putting his signature during a function held at the party office here today.
Loitongbam Sarat, who is the first elected representative of the people on MPP ticket, was the second individual who appended his signature ahead of other party functionaries and well wishers.
Explaining the reason for the signature campaign, president of MPP Youth Front Manihar Luwang said that as the Government of Manipur has failed to listen to the public demand for justice on the July 23 incident, inspite of various agitations, the Youth Front has taken the initiative of collecting the signatures of all the people of Manipur and the same would be submitted to the President of India along with a memorandum.
Apart from highlighting the difficulties being faced by the people since the imposition of Armed Forces Special Powers Act in Manipur, the memorandum will also raise the public demand for registering an FIR case against the police officials who are involved in trying to mislead the people on the July 23 incident, handing over the case to CBI and resignation of the Chief Minister on moral ground, he informed.
Speaking at the occasion, Dr Nimaichand Luwang observed that instead of trying to find out the root cause of the present unsettling situation in the State, the notion of using force to subdue the ongoing public movement is despicable.
Even if it succeeded in diverting the attention of the people from the truth of the matter, it would never be able to abate the anger of the people.
Stating that the signature campaign which began from today is for MPP but for the public, Dr Nimaichand also appealed to the people to come out and participate in the campaign wholeheartedly.
