Imphal, August 11:
Manipur Peoples Party (MPP) has denounced the statements of Union Home Minister and Defence Minister wherein they maintained that the ongoing movement for revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act from Manipur is being carried out at the behest of under organisations by their frontal organisations.
A meeting of the partys working committee held yesterday strongly condemned the statements as an attempt to mislead the cause of the people of Manipur.
In view of Centres reluctance lift AFSPA despite public outcry against the excesses being committed by security personnel with immunity granted under the draconian Act, MPP has pressurised the two ruling political parties, Congress and CPI, not to wait for response from the central high command in taking a definite decision on the public demand.
Reacting strongly against the statement given by Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil in connection with removal of AFSPA from the State, Keibung Welfare Assn has statement as very unfortunate and immature which should be condemned by one and all.
Asserting that AFSPA has completely failed to serve its purpose and instead insurgent groups have been mushrooming in the State ever since it was imposed, the Assn questioned why the Central leaders were so keen on imposing this dreaded law in the North East region when other States which are more badly hit by insurgency have ben let off with some lenient laws.
It also said that the Centre by refusing to revoke the AFSPA in the interest of the agitating people is inviting more trouble to this trouble torn State.
