Cyber security awareness meet held

A one day workshop on cyber security awareness for members of Panchayati Raj Institutions and media persons was organised by the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) at their Akampat campus today under the aegis of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
NIC State Informatics Officer Kh Rajen, NIELIT Imphal Executive Director Th Prameshwor, AMWJU president Wangkhemcha Shamjai and Editors' Guild Manipur president Ahongsangbam Mobi attended the inaugural session as presidium members.
Speaking at the inaugural session, Kh Rajen highlighted the need for every people to be aware about the cyber world and its different aspects.
He advised all internet users not to open unknown links or websites.
He also highlighted the need to organise similar workshops in schools and colleges.
Th Prameshwor said that cyber crime or cyber security is not restricted to computers alone.
It also encompasses smart phones, mobile phones, debit cards, e-wallets, digital camera and other electronic devices.
Apart from providing limitless space to organised criminals, cyber space also provides innumerable opportunities, he said.
He categorically stated that nothing is safe in cyber space.
Cyber space, if used constructively, can be a fertile breeding ground for technology savvy youths to become cyber police, cyber lawyers, cyber journalists etc, he added.
Imphal West Additional SP Dr Sarangthem Ibomcha who is also in charge of the State's cyber crime unit gave a power point presentation on profiles of cyber criminals.
Out of 103 cyber crimes registered in 2015, 29 cases were solved.
These included 14 cases of misusing social networking sites, 20 cases of theft/loss of mobile phones, 15 cases of sending threat messages/lewd images, and 54 cases of bank fraud.
Around Rs 1.75 lakh were returned to accounts of bank fraud victims, Dr Ibomcha said.
Out of 379 cyber crimes registered in 2016, 232 were solved.
So far, police have managed to pull up 27 individuals involved in cyber crimes and most of them are young boys who have limited knowledge about information technology, he added.
NIELIT Joint Directors Angom Babloo, Laishram Shyamsunder and Bishnupur Additional SP Victoria Yengkhom too presented papers on cyber security and cyber crime.
