Awareness programme on 'Cane & Bamboo and its application' held

An awareness programme on 'Cane & Bamboo and its application' was held at Song Song village, Senapati district on August 8, said Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur in a press statement.
The programme was organized by Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal, Manipur and Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur with support from Cane and Bamboo Technology Centre (CBTC), Guwahati, Assam under North Eastern Council, Ministry of DoNER, Government of India.
MPs of Manipur Dr RK Ranjan and Dr Lorho S Pfoze attended the event as chief guest and president respectively while Prof M Premjit Singh, vice Chancellor, Central Agricultural University (CAU); Prof W Chandbabu Singh, Registrar, Manipur University; Heni Kaikho, Chairman, Song Song village and Mayanglambam Khelendro Singh, vice president, Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur attended as guests of honour.
During the function, Dr RK Ranjan proposed to establish a Slopeland Research Institute under the initiative of CAU and another hill university while Dr Lorho S Pfoze is also willing to set up the high-altitude research institutes as soon as possible.
CAU has already agreed on it, he further added.
Apart from the distribution of bamboos, coconuts, avocado, beehive boxes, piglet, sprayers, the villagers were also handed Chief Ministergi Hakshelgi Tengbang (CMHT) cards.
The event was seen as a success as many demanded for more such awareness programme on 'Cane and Bamboo' in the remaining districts of Manipur especially in Tamenglong, Churachandpur, Chandel, Noney, Jiri, Ukhrul, Kangpokpi, Pherzawl and Kamjong districts.
At the outset of the programme, both Members of Parliament of Manipur, Dr Lorho S Pfoze and Dr RK Ranjan visited the land subsidence sites.
The villagers of the area are taking in the refugees of the neighbouring areas which have been affected by the land subsidence, or are vulnerable, it stated.
It is also mentioned that as per the preliminary reports, the land subsidence might be caused due to the aquifer-system hydrocompaction.
However, it needs to be studied further and geologist and seismologist experts from Manipur University are investigating the matter.
It will find out the exact cause of subsidence soon, it added.
