Imphal, April 07 2009:
The first phase of the Imphal Sewerage Project being implemented here with assistance of the Government of France is facing further delay to complete.
An official source informed that the Government is planning to lay pipes without digging up National Highways and other important roads of Imphal city by boring into earth employing Trenchless technology.
To make tunnels for laying pipes using Trenchless technology, the State Government has contacted a firm based at Kolkata.
The firm has already submitted to the State Government the estimated amount that would be necessary to execute the tunnel work.
Moreover, engineers of the firm have conducted a survey at Imphal.
However, with the State Government not ready to accept the amount estimated amount put up by the Government, the two sides are making negotiations on the amount, conveyed the source.
Yet, technical committee of the State Government has approved utilising the Trenchless technology to make tunnels for laying sewerage pipes.
Hoping that it can strike an agreement with the firm on the amount soon, the State Government was planning to begin tunnel making work right after the Parliamentary elections.
But under the circumstances, it is most unlikely that the tunnel making work will begin this rather.
Rather the same work may be initiated during the working season next year.
According to the Government plan, tunnels will be made using Trenchless technology from the southern gate of Kangla to the Treasury office and from Ima Keithel to New Market through the BT Flyover.
Till date, 50 percent of the Sewerage Project's primary works have been completed.
Secondary work of household survey has also been completed.
For interested people intending to extend pipes till their houses, the Government would make estimates of the required costs, conveyed the official source.
