Imphal, June 05 2010:
"Though the Manipur state is faced with problems including that of insurgency and ethnic tension coupled with unemployment and slow pace of economic development, one should look forward to the future of the state with hope and confidence to bring peace, unity and for the welfare of the people", said Manipur Governor, Gurbachan Jagat on Saturday.
Jagat said this on the occasion of 'the gold medal presentation ceremony' of Manipur University at the university campus today.
He also said that Manipur has been facing a plethora of problems, saying in some ways they are unique but in many ways they are common to the North East region as well as to large parts of the country.
The Governor believed that the creativity, the spirit of adventure and cultural and spiritual values of the Manipur people would help in solving the problems of the state soon.
Gurbachan pointed out that Manipur is a rich store-house of culture with distinctive qualities and characteristics representing various facets of life of the communities inhabiting the state which is why Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru described Manipur as the jewel of India.
On the occasion, 71 gold medals and 7 cash awards were conferred and presented to the scholars and students of the Manipur University today.
