Imphal, February 05 2013:
As observed in different parts of Manipur, this year's Puya Meithaba (burning of holy scriptures) anniversary was also observed yesterday at Montreal Canada.
The solemn commemorative function was attended by distinguished writer Thokchom Manihar and many Manipuri diasporas.
Speaking at the occasion, Thokchom Manihar said that human history is not alien to massive burning of books and scriptures.
Sree N Gopi Foundation founder Nameirakpam Ananta K Singh highlighted the importance for Meiteis settled in different parts of the planet to preserve their culture and traditions.
He said that the present generation should pass on information and knowledge about the unforgettable historical event of Puya Meithaba.
"Though we are living in metropolitan cities, we should never forget our origin and history.
The real agenda behind the burning of Puyas was aimed at destroying the very foundation of Manipuri civilization but it met with failure because our forefathers could save a good number of Puyas and they are being reproduced", Ananta said.
The function culminated with the vote of thanks given by International Committee on Puya Meithaba member Hamom Promud.
He said, "we should never forget the disastrous event of Puya Meithaba" .
"Even though a large number of Puyas were destroyed, Manipuri people's patriotism, love for their own culture, traditions and language were not dented a bit", Promud said.
