Sawombung bridge stares at further delay

Imphal, November 02 2019:
Sawombung bridge, which is to be built over Iril river and which is already running behind its completion deadline by around 2 years (as per its contract agreement), is going to be further delayed after the iron reinforcements which were erected/built to support the concrete slabs were washed away by rising water level recently.
The Ministry of Road Transports and Highways had sanctioned a total of Rs 14.14 crore during the financial year 2012-13 for construction of the bridge.

Tenders were called three times for construction of the 12.9 metres wide and 64 metres long bridge and work order was scored by Kolkata based M/S Supreme Infrastructure Pvt Ltd.
The work order amount of the bridge was Rs 12.7 crore and the foundation stone was laid on June 3, 2015 by the then Works Minister Ksh Biren with the aim of completing the bridge in two years.
However, malpractices and unethical work process delayed the project and ultimately led to cancellation of the contract.
In the midst of such setbacks, the iron reinforcements built to support the concrete slabs of the bridge were washed away by rising river current recently.
Sources have also opined that the iron reinforcements have to be built or repaired again but the workers need to wait for the water levels to drop to begin work.
As such, the bridge construction work is most likely to be further delayed which is already running way behind its schedule.
