Ukhrul, March 30 2020:
MLA Alfred Arthur Kanngam today inspected the water reservoir and treatment site of PHED at Phungreitang, Ukhrul to take stock of water reserved for distribution in the District Headquarters during the total lockdown period.
The Ukhrul MLA said that PHED, Ukhrul would start a mobile distribution of water in co-ordination with All Hunphun Tangs Association (AHTA) for those families without tap water connection.
This will ensure the residents of the town stay indoors and avoid contact with others.
Water would be delivered on a rotational basis in all localities of the District Headquarter to reduce rush of public movement.
The MLA also held a discussion with PHED engineers and staffs on how to streamline a better supply of water during this emergency crisis.
They expressed that practical difficulties of water management is due to shrinkage of a spring water source at Shirui Mountain.
Later, the MLA rushed to Shirui village along with PHED officers and held an interactive session with the two headmen and elders on how to sort out the issues of the water crisis in the town.
During the meeting, the villagers reported that the shortage of linemen has unable them to check the pipeline or mend it in time to check the shortage of water.
Saying that there is an overflow of water at some intake points, they opined that pipe leakage should also be mend at earliest to avert water wastage.
According to source from the department, over 14 lakh litres of water have been stored for supplying during an emergency.
At least 10 lakhs litres of water is required daily for uninterrupted supply of water.
