Close on the heels of 15 school children collapsing inside an overcrowded school van yesterday, All Manipur Guardian Stuents Organisation (AMSGO) has demanded that strict instruction be given by Education Minister to van drivers not to cram students in their vehicles while transporting them to schools.
In a press conference held at its Palace Compound office today, AMSGO Secretary Organisation S Sumati condemning the incident said that the organisation had already appealed the van drivers not to overcrowd their vehicles in transporting students.
Saying that yesterday's incident happened as the van drivers did not heed to the appeal of the organisation, S Sumati added that similar incidents may occur in future as well.
Although, there is also a directive of the Supreme Court not to transport more than 11 students (12 persons including the driver) in a van, drivers are violating the directive by cramming in students above the permitted limit, she added.
Drawing attention of the Education Minister in this regard, S Sumati demanded that necessary measure be taken up by the Minister to avoid recurrence of similar incidents in future.
Urging the parents and school authority to check over congestion of school vans, S Sumati requested the drivers to follow the safety norms.
