Imphal, October 19 2014:
Coming down heavily on the culture of corruption, MPP president N Sovakiran today stated that while a petty lifter is dubbed a thief and a robber, those who divert huge development funds for their own ends are being accorded status and respect.
Speaking to the media at the MPP office today, Sovakiran said that the State Government has been diverting a huge amount of development funds and using them for election.
Such culture of corruption has led to many schemes lying incomplete, he added.
On the just concluded by election to Hiyanglam Assembly Constituency, Sovakiran said that all the 47 Congress MLAs arrived at the 34 polling stations of the Constituency.
In some cases, more than one MLA arrived at the polling station, he said and added that it would have been that much better if the Imphal-Jiribam highway is equally distributed to the 47 Congress MLAs.
Such an arrangement will ensure that the highway is kept in good condition, he added.
On the Assembly elections at Maharashtra and Haryana, Sovakiran said that the Shiv Sena has done exceptionally well in Maharashtra while in Haryana the Indian National Lok Dal has done well.
All these instances show that regional political parties are showing their might and influence.
In some States, it is the regional parties which have come to power, he added.
It is in the belief that the public would repose their faith in the regional political parties that the MPP fielded a candidate in the by election to Hiyanglam Assembly Constituency.
However the MPP could not concentrate all its energy on the by election as it was clear that the National parties had managed to make inroads there.
Admitting that the MPP is dogged by certain shortcomings, Sovakiran said that financial clout is one of them.
