Landslides continue in Twilang area, JMDC urges

Landslides continue to ravage various places in Twilang area along the Imphal-Tamenglong road while the Joint Monitoring Development Committee of IT Road has been clearing the debris exhaustively.
Four landslides reportedly occurred last night between Joupi and T Vaichong Sub Divisional Headquarters and there is a possibility of more landslides if the rain continues for a day or more.
Three private passenger vehicles from Lanka and Lhouthang and four army vehicles from Tamei heading towards Kangpokpi District Headquarters are stranded near Gelnal village owing to the landslides.
The Joint Monitoring Development Committee of IT Road has appealed to the public to avoid unnecessary travelling in the area.
The road between Chalwa and T Vaichong Sub Divisional Headquarters which was closed in the morning was opened only after clearing the debris by the JMDC volunteers.
However, the debris of the landslide that occurred at Phoikon village is still not cleared, according to JMDC.
The debris brought down by the mudslide at Lamlenkon near T Vaichong Sub Divisional Headquarters has also submerged a vast section of Imphal-Tamenglong road and it is yet to be cleared till today.
An earth crack has reportedly developed at Rijaltahar in Irang Part-II and it has severely damaged a residential house belonging to Gyan Bahadur Adhikari.
The only raod available for the people of the Twilang area to commute at present is the PMGSY road from Chawangkining to T Vaichong Sub Divisional Headquarters via Tapon but a few yards of the road is also on the verge of crumbling near Gorkha Tapon.
The JMDC of IT Road thanked all the people who have been lending a helping hand in clearing the debris.
The swelling Irang River, popularly known as Twilang River by the locals, has also damaged a portion of paddy fields between Vangchomphai and Joupi area.
JMDC Chairman, Lutngam Manlun said that almost all the paddy cultivators in the area depend on the tributary which has been damaged by Twilang river and added that paddy cultivation will fail if the tributary is not restored.
