Imphal, May 16 2017:
The
Central Committee of MPP,
one of the oldest regional
political party in the North
East, has decided to oust the
party's current president on
charges of misusing party
funds, breaking the party's
policy and failure to take up
any steps to strengthen the
party.
The source stated that
party members not only
agreed to oust party president
N Sovakiran but also
locked his office today.
According to a source
inside MPP office at Mapal
Kangjeibung, members who
came for the Central Committee
meeting called by the
party's general secretary
became enraged after finding
a notice in front of
Sovakiran's office postponing
the meeting.
It pointed out that the
members still held the meeting
and the president
himself participated in the
meeting but soon a scuffle
broke out when the Central
Committee leveled various
charges against him and a
team of Imphal West district
police had to intervene.
One of the charges alleged
Sovakiran and his
family members of not voting
in the 11th State
Legislative Assembly election
at Heirok A/C.
The Central Committee
accused Sovakiran of misusing
amounting to around
Rs 50 lakh from the party's election fund.
Sovakiran along with four other candidates contested the
election under the party ticket but the Central Committee accused
the president of sanctioning some funds to the four
candidates while keeping the rest for himself.
It also alleged that Sovakiran collected the rent of the
houses and shops built on the party's land for his own use.
They further alleged that the president did not take up any
initiative to organise a political conference regarding the election,
did not carry out any banner or poster campaign, nor
made plans to send out candidates to contest Panchayat, Municipal
nor Assembly election all through his two terms as the
party president.
The Central Committee also accused Sovakiran
of harassing and threatening key party members instead of
taking up steps to strengthen the party.
MPP advisor and former MLA Y Thambal pointed out that
the president has no authority to postpone the Central Committee
meeting while MPP State Returing Officer Maimom
Sharat said that the Central Committee is above the Working
Committee and has the power to impeach the party's president.
Speaking at the meeting, president N Sovakiran clarified
that he tried to postpone the meeting due to some inconveniences
and claimed that the allegations leveled against him in
the account statement were false and baseless.
However, the Central Committee declined to accept the
president's clarification and did not pass the account statement,
the news source added.
It further stated that the Central Committee appointed O
Jugindro as the interim president and agreed to appoint him
as MPP president within six months.
The Central Committee also resolved to collect the funds
misused by Sovakiran, through legal means.
