Senapati, August 31 2020:
Landslide debris that had left blocking the major portion of the NH-2 for the last 2 months at a place above Mt Zion Sr Sec School, Kathikho Karong, between Khongnem and Karong, were voluntarily cleared by the villagers of Kathikho Karong today.
Mention may be made that the landslide occurred along the aforementioned place in the last week of June with arrival of monsoon, along the approach road cut by the villagers.
The villagers of Kathikho village stated that they had completed their cutting of the new approach road by mid March last, having cleared all the debris along the NH-2 .

However, it is reported that the BIPL had accused the villagers to have encroached the NH by asking the Police to take action against them in the past where villagers mentioned that it was a natural calamity, adding the villagers had no intention for encroachment.
When the villagers reported to the BIPL who are engaged in managing the NH at present about it, they mentioned that the BIPL demanded Rs 5 lakh to clear the debris that had blocked a major portion of the NH.
To this, the Kathikho Karong villagers strongly condemned the ill motive of the BIPL to have accused the villagers and to demand such ransom amount to clear the debris along the highway.
The villagers had earlier clarified to the Deputy Commissioner, Senapati stating that the landslide took place from top of the hill with the arrival of monsoon and not man-made calamity to have blocked the NH.
Spot enquiry was conducted by the District Police along with village leaders in the past and had reportedly confirmed it as natural calamity.
With no Government/private machineries coming to clear the highway, the villagers seeing the hardships faced by the commuters along the affected portion since long, leading it to become an accident prone area, decided to clear the landslide debris with 2 JCBs and 2 excavators today.
