Imphal, July 28 2022:
Demanding discussion on promotion of Manipuri language at the Assembly, volunteers of AMSU, MSF, DESAM, SUK, AIMS and KSA staged a protest demonstration in front of MSF office along Tiddim Road at Kwakeithel, today.
Different placards demanding reference books of Manipuri in Meitei Mayek, establishment of Manipur State Population Commission and Language Commission and preparation of NRC were used by the protesters.
Notably, the six student organisations have been urging Members of the House to discuss formulation of State Language Policy and establishment of Language Commission and Transliterate Committee to promote Manipuri language during the second session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly.
Speaking to media persons, AMSU president Haobijam Chalambana said that they (the six student organisations) staged the protest demonstration to denounce the Government for not paying any heed to their demand to formulate a Manipur Language Policy and Manipur State Population Commission to protect the indigenous language and people of the State despite repeated reminders.
Claiming that the Language Directorate hasn't done anything worthwhile to promote the language of Manipur, he said that students pursuing Master's degree in Manipuri are facing great difficulties due to non availability of reference books in Meitei Mayek and partial conversion of their syllabus to the original script of the State.
Chalamba then urged the State Government to constitute a Transliteration Committee so as to make reference books in Meitei Mayek available to the students who take Manipuri as a subject in higher studies.
Further stating that the student organisations have even submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to establish Manipur State Population Committee and prepare NRC to identify the illegal immigrants, the AMSU president said that the Centre, however, hasn't given any response till date.
