Imphal, June 28 2012:
No meaningful report of the entomological surveillance conducted in some areas of Manipur including Moreh in April by the National Institute of Malarial Research Centre, New Delhi under the Indian Council of Medical Research could be published till date.
Primary objectives of the surveillance were identification of mosquito types found in different places and devising precautionary measures against diseases for which the mosquitoes can act as carriers.
However, the National Institute of Malarial Research Centre, New Delhi is still unable to come up with any meaningful report, informed a source.
Following the failure of the National Institute of Malarial Research Centre, a new surveillance has begun under the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme which is being implemented under the State Government.
In the first phase, the surveillance team is surveying Jiribam to find out the types of mosquitoes found there as well as the diseases which can be spread to human being through these mosquitoes.
It is reported that the cases of malaria infection is much lower this year as compared to the previous year.
According to a report published by the Directorate of National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme, cases of malaria infection (Plasmodium Felciparum and Plasmodium Vivex) have gone down considerably.
Decline in the cases of malaria infection is a sign of success for the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme.
However, it cannot be claimed that the programme has achieved complete success.
Some States like Manipur have been facing difficulties in implementing the programme on accou nt of non-release of funds in time.
For Manipur, June and July are the two months which demand maximum and intensive precautionary measures against malaria infection.
But no precautionary measures can be taken up till date due to non-release of funds, informed the source.
