Imphal, March 27 2011:
Instead of demanding ex-gratia for a son/daughter lost in the hands of State actors, people should focus more on resolving the Indo-Manipur conflict, said social activist Joy Nongmaithem.
He was addressing a public meeting held at Kumbi Keithel under the aegis of the All Kumbi Kendra Women Welfare Association today on the topic "People's Participation in Resolving Indo-Manipur Conflict" .
"Security forces would be killing our sons and daughters as and when they wish as long the Indo-Manipur conflict is not resolved, and our people will continue to face the brunt", Joy said.
The meeting resolved that the people of Manipur should be allowed to participate in resolving the Indo-Manipur conflict through plebiscite.
The demand to transfer all cases of Manipuri insurgents arrested outside the State to the Government of Manipur was another resolution of the meeting.
The third resolution was to send these resolutions to the UNO and also to all international human right organisations.
After the departure of British on August 14, 1947, Manipur became an independent country having its own constitution.
But Manipur was "forcibly merged to India" on October 15, 1949.Since then Manipuri people have been living a wretched life, he said.

When NH-39 and NH-53 were blocked, Manipuri people suffered silently and stoically.
Although India is a democratic country which has ratified many UN covenants and declarations on human rights, the Government of India has been openly threatening right to life of the Manipuri people.
People do not have faith in the peace talks between the Govt of India and NSCN-IM as well as with Kuki UG groups for the public are not taken into confidence in the dialogue process.
To resolve a conflict people should be taken into confidence and the solution must be in accordance to the wish and aspiration of the people.
Observing that it's time for the people to take pro-active roles in resolving the Indo-Manipur conflict, Joy Nongmaithem called upon the people to deliberate on the UNLF's proposal for plebiscite without any sense of fear or reservation.
UPF president YK Dhiren also endorsed the call for people's participation in resolving the conflict.
He said that people should vote in favour of insurgents who have been fighting for right to self determination of the Manipuri nation.
If people wish to live under the alien, people may vote in favour of the Government way.
The indo-Manipur conflict can be resolved only through either of this way, he asserted.
The meeting was also attended by the All Kumbi Kendra Women Welfare Association advisor Moirangthem Maniyai, general secretary of the association K Khomdonbi and Nupi Samaj general secretary Thokchom Ramani as presidium members.
