Imphal, July 26 2015:
A one-day discussion programme on 'ILPS and Mass Movement in Manipur' was held today at Manipur Press Club here under the aegis of the United Development Association (UDA), Khangabok.
Advocate Khaidem Mani, Prof A Lokendro, Dhanabir Laishram and Naharolgi Thoudang Editor Khoirom Loyalakpa spoke at the discussion programme.
Dhanabir Laishram said that it would be prudent on the part of the Government to re-open all the educational institutions which were closed by the Government out of apprehension.
One cannot blame students for joining protest movements.
Students and youth join protest movements spontaneously because they have a deep sense of patriotism.
The modes of protest movements vary directly with the Government's response and the State Government is infamous for not paying any heed to democratic forms of agitation, said Dhanabir while citing the case of Irom Sharmila.
Prof Lokendro stated that the present phase of the protest movement is closely related with history.
If pushed to the limits, there is no guarantee that civilians may not take up arms.
When Manipur was self reliant, there was a permit system but today non-local people are on the threshold of outgrowing the indigenous population, Prof Lokendro said.
It would be far more productive if the Government and all elected leaders join hands to resolve all outstanding public issues in consultation with the public rather than trying to undermine or ignore protest movements, he asserted.
Loyalakpa demanded that due accountability and responsibility should be fixed for the killing of Sapam Robinhood.
